THE DEGENERATES

There was high unemployment in Britain during the Industrial Revolution, and those who did work often worked extremely long hours. As many people were unemployed, they were unable to gain money which led to stealing and a life of crime.

The unemployed were extremely poor which meant barely any food, they lived without a shelter and the people often turned to alcohol. Most would become sick as they were unhygienic, or die because of undernourishment or alcohol.

Cause:

During the Industrial Revolution, the population of unemployed increased, mostly due to the fact that working became harder and they worked under harsher environments. With the invention of steam and coal powered machines came new jobs such as more miners but decreased the amount of jobs that were done by man.

Effect:

Unemployment meant that many people lived on the streets without shelter and food. Without a job to go to, they were unable to make money, which meant no food, water, shelter, clothing, they were unable to clean which led to sicknesw and had nothing to do in their lives. People often turned to alcohol to make the days seem to go faster.

Long Term Effect:

Unemployment meant that people were unable to afford food and houses which led to sickness, and as they were unable to buy medicine they most oftenly got worse and possibly died.

Homelessness is still a massive problem today, much like it was during the Industrial Revolution, although many people have been helping those who need homes.
